ME/CFS: choosing rest without promises of recovery

For someone with ME/CFS, the effort involved in reaching an appointment may outweigh any enjoyment of the visit.

For someone with ME/CFS, the effort involved in reaching an appointment may outweigh any enjoyment of the visit. A considerate conversation starts with your limits and preferences, not an expectation that relaxation or positive thinking will restore your health.

A practical starting point

Estimate the effort of arranging, travelling to and recovering from the appointment using your own experience. Ask whether questions can be handled in advance and whether the session can end early. Decide freely that an appointment is not right for you.

What Reiki can realistically offer

Reiki is a complementary practice that some people choose as a quiet wellbeing experience. You remain free to decide about touch, conversation and positioning. Feeling relaxed is a personal experience, not evidence that an illness has changed. Research has not established Reiki as an effective treatment for any health condition, and the proposed energy field has no scientific evidence behind it.

A question to bring to a consultation

Can you respect my established energy-management plan without encouraging me to push through symptoms?

Before committing, agree on a goal that matters to you and a point at which to review whether the sessions are useful. You are free to stop. A practitioner should explain their limits clearly and welcome questions about other sources of support.

When to seek professional support

Reiki does not treat ME/CFS. Follow your clinical care plan and discuss any worsening or new symptoms with your healthcare team.

This article is general information for adults, not a diagnosis or individual treatment advice. Complementary support should sit alongside appropriate healthcare. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice from the professional responsible for it.
