Overthinking: moving from a broad worry to a specific next step

Overthinking can leave you reviewing the same issue while feeling no closer to a decision.

Overthinking can leave you reviewing the same issue while feeling no closer to a decision. NLP sometimes uses questions about language and goals; you can consider those as reflective tools without assuming they are a proven treatment for anxiety.

A practical starting point

Write one recurring thought exactly as it appears. Underline vague words such as 'everything' or 'always', then describe the actual situation more precisely. Decide whether a practical action is available or whether you need support tolerating uncertainty.

The scope and limits of NLP

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is offered in some coaching settings to explore language, habits and personal goals. It is not the same as an established psychological treatment. A systematic review found little reliable evidence of improved health outcomes, with limitations in the available studies. Treat any exercise here as optional reflection, not a clinical prescription or a promise to change symptoms.

A question to bring to a consultation

Can we work on one everyday example instead of promising to stop all unwanted thoughts?

Before committing, agree on a goal that matters to you and a point at which to review whether the sessions are useful. You are free to stop. A practitioner should explain their limits clearly and welcome questions about other sources of support.

When to seek professional support

Persistent rumination that disrupts sleep or daily life deserves professional mental health advice. Do not use coaching to delay assessment.

This article is general information for adults, not a diagnosis or individual treatment advice. Complementary support should sit alongside appropriate healthcare. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice from the professional responsible for it.
