People-pleasing and emotional exhaustion: practising a clear response

Saying yes automatically can leave little space for rest, yet saying no may feel uncomfortable or risky.

Saying yes automatically can leave little space for rest, yet saying no may feel uncomfortable or risky. A coaching conversation should explore the context and your options rather than label you as weak or imply every boundary is safe to express.

A practical starting point

Choose a low-risk request from a person who usually respects you. Draft a response that acknowledges the request and states what you can realistically offer. Practise it aloud without adding a long defence of your needs.

The scope and limits of NLP

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is offered in some coaching settings to explore language, habits and personal goals. It is not the same as an established psychological treatment. A systematic review found little reliable evidence of improved health outcomes, with limitations in the available studies. Treat any exercise here as optional reflection, not a clinical prescription or a promise to change symptoms.

A question to bring to a consultation

Can we explore the real consequences of a boundary before rehearsing it?

Before committing, agree on a goal that matters to you and a point at which to review whether the sessions are useful. You are free to stop. A practitioner should explain their limits clearly and welcome questions about other sources of support.

When to seek professional support

If a relationship involves coercion, threats or abuse, seek specialist support. Communication exercises are not a solution to another person's abusive behaviour.

This article is general information for adults, not a diagnosis or individual treatment advice. Complementary support should sit alongside appropriate healthcare. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice from the professional responsible for it.
