Presentation nerves: rehearsing a realistic speaking goal
A presentation can feel like a judgement of your whole competence rather than a short opportunity to communicate.
A presentation can feel like a judgement of your whole competence rather than a short opportunity to communicate. NLP-based rehearsal may be offered as a coaching tool; its useful scope is preparation, not a guarantee that nervousness will disappear.
A practical starting point
Write the one point you want listeners to remember. Rehearse the opening and a sentence you can use if you lose your place. Judge the practice by whether your message is understandable rather than whether you feel perfectly calm.
The scope and limits of NLP
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is offered in some coaching settings to explore language, habits and personal goals. It is not the same as an established psychological treatment. A systematic review found little reliable evidence of improved health outcomes, with limitations in the available studies. Treat any exercise here as optional reflection, not a clinical prescription or a promise to change symptoms.
A question to bring to a consultation
Can we prepare for a pause or mistake instead of imagining a flawless performance?
Before committing, agree on a goal that matters to you and a point at which to review whether the sessions are useful. You are free to stop. A practitioner should explain their limits clearly and welcome questions about other sources of support.
When to seek professional support
If fear is severe, causes panic or prevents you from meeting everyday responsibilities, consider professional mental health support.
