Shift-work exhaustion: finding a workable pause

When your working hours move around, ordinary advice about restful evenings may not fit your life.

When your working hours move around, ordinary advice about restful evenings may not fit your life. A wellbeing appointment has to fit the sleep opportunity you actually have, otherwise the journey and timing can become another source of exhaustion.

A practical starting point

Look at your rota before choosing an appointment. Protect the sleep period available to you and consider transport after a night shift. Ask whether the timing can be flexible rather than booking at the expense of needed rest.

What Reiki can realistically offer

Reiki is a complementary practice that some people choose as a quiet wellbeing experience. You remain free to decide about touch, conversation and positioning. Feeling relaxed is a personal experience, not evidence that an illness has changed. Research has not established Reiki as an effective treatment for any health condition, and the proposed energy field has no scientific evidence behind it.

A question to bring to a consultation

Can we find a time that does not cut into my main sleep period?

Before committing, agree on a goal that matters to you and a point at which to review whether the sessions are useful. You are free to stop. A practitioner should explain their limits clearly and welcome questions about other sources of support.

When to seek professional support

If shift work is affecting your health or safety, speak with your GP or occupational health service. Reiki cannot compensate for sleep deprivation or unsafe working hours.

This article is general information for adults, not a diagnosis or individual treatment advice. Complementary support should sit alongside appropriate healthcare. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice from the professional responsible for it.
