Stress after redundancy: finding a next step without forced optimism

Losing work can affect routine, identity and a sense of security all at once.

Losing work can affect routine, identity and a sense of security all at once. A coaching conversation may help you choose a next action, but it should not reframe a difficult financial situation as merely a problem with your beliefs.

A practical starting point

Separate immediate practical needs from longer-term choices. Pick one action, such as checking available support or contacting someone who can review your CV. Leave room for disappointment without requiring a positive lesson from the experience.

The scope and limits of NLP

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is offered in some coaching settings to explore language, habits and personal goals. It is not the same as an established psychological treatment. A systematic review found little reliable evidence of improved health outcomes, with limitations in the available studies. Treat any exercise here as optional reflection, not a clinical prescription or a promise to change symptoms.

A question to bring to a consultation

Can we set a useful goal while acknowledging the real uncertainty I face?

Before committing, agree on a goal that matters to you and a point at which to review whether the sessions are useful. You are free to stop. A practitioner should explain their limits clearly and welcome questions about other sources of support.

When to seek professional support

Seek financial or employment advice from appropriate services. If distress affects sleep, mood or daily functioning, consider professional health support too.

This article is general information for adults, not a diagnosis or individual treatment advice. Complementary support should sit alongside appropriate healthcare. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice from the professional responsible for it.
